Will Sessions is a musical collective and brainchild of Sam Beaubien (arranger, trumpet and keyboards), who after being tired of seeing so many bandleaders cut members to save money, decided it was time to form a big band to explore his deep affinity for rare funk, hip hop, and jazz/fusion.

During his tenor at Wayne State, a double major in Jazz Studies and Education, Sam became roommates with Dominic Arellano, the Few’s label head.  After placing him on a Red Bull Detroit compilation in 2005 and hearing Sam play in a variety of genres, Dominic realized Sam’s talent for not just his vivid trumpet playing, but his songwriting.  Soon after graduation, Sam was signed to the newly formed the Few Records.  Utilizing his productions skills and the best players he had met while in college (Tim Shellabarger - bass, Bryan Arnold - drums), he recorded the album “many faces,” which was released to critical acclaim by the Few in 2008.

Along the way, Sam saw a need for a band that could play his original compositions as well as revive obscure funk gems.  He then added guitar (Ryan Gimpert) and a horn section (Tom Parks, Justin Jozwiak, Matt Martinez).  The members were specifically added because of the musicianship and understanding of and approach to the material being played.  Others have noticed as well.   Because of the musicianship and style, the public and other successful artists have taken note.  Artists like Mayor Hawthorne, Black Milk, Slum Village, Mary J. Blidge and many others have used various members of Will Sessions to give them “that sound.”  And fans have flocked to hear them play across Detroit, including Funk Night, a party known to draw up to 1,500 people.

Ready for a huge 2010 year, space is the limit for Will Sessions.  You might see them with MCs, diggin’ in at a jazz club or making your feet dizzy with their Detroit Funk.  Any of the 3 will leave you smiling.

Cop it.  Look for new Will Sessions recordings for 2010, out soon on the Few Records.  And download their track “Blind Man Sees (the Soundtrack)” for Free on the Few home page.
