New Music Detroit is a contemporary music collective made up of some of the  city’s most versatile and highly-trained musicians. They are dedicated to performing challenging and dynamic works from the late twentieth century to the present day: from seminal new music ‘classics’ to innovative, genre-defying works written by today’s emerging young composers. Since its inception in 2007, NMD has presented local & world premieres by an impressive array of composers. From ground-breaking masters like Phillip Glass, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio and Steve Reich, to exciting contemporary voices such as Georges Aperghis, Alexandra du Bois, Marc Mellits and John Zorn.

NMD’s founding members (Ian Ding - percussion, Erik Rönmark - saxophones, Robert Tye - guitar, Adrienne Rönmark - violin/viola, Gina DiBello -violin and Daniel Bauch - percussion) all hold permanent positions or close affiliations with noted institutions at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, University of Michigan School of Music, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Minnesota Orchestra.  Its members have also performed with the Bang on a Can All-Stars, Pacifica String Quartet, Marlboro Music Festival and Verbier and Schleswig Holstein Festivals in Europe, among others. Their extensive training includes performance degrees from the Juilliard School in New York, University of Michigan and Boston University.

Outside of their ongoing performances, NMD may be best known for their acclaimed festival Strange Beautiful Music, a daylong concert encompassing contemporary classical music, experimental jazz, “noise”, techno/electronic music, and other avant-garde genres.  Held every fall, Strange Beautiful Music is curated and produced by NMD, and is now entering its fourth year.

Look out for NMD recordings in 2010.  Download founding member Ian Ding’s marimba arrangement of Steve Reich’s "Vermont Counterpoint" on the Few’s home page.
